As a postman/woman you would collect and sort letters and parcels, and make deliveries.
You would perform different functions at different times, including collecting mail from post boxes and businesses over a set route; delivering this mail to a mail centre where it is sorted automatically; sorting some mail by hand and typing new addresses on illegible mail; putting mail into mailbags and loading them on to vans, lorries, trains and even aircraft to be delivered; delivering mail to several hundred addresses on a round.
To do this work you need to be physically fit and able to lift heavy loads; happy walking and standing for long periods; able to work outdoors; reliable, honest and trustworthy.

Career Path: |
No formal academic qualifications are needed to become a postman/woman. Candidates are selected following an aptitude test and interview. Most opportunities are with Royal Mail.
In future, other opportunities may be with bulk mail operators. Promotion is to supervisory and management levels.
Promotion opportunities may increase for those willing to
move to other sorting centres. More senior positions may be available at an operational and logistical level.
